Established 1963 by Gilbert Moses and John O'Neal to act as a cultural and educational extension of the civil rights movement in the south; based in Jackson, Miss. later transfered to New Orleans - Correspondence, financial records, mss. of plays, memoranda, telegrams, box office sheets, mailing lists, programs, pamphlets, broadsides, posters, clippings, and photos. Includes the last performances and activities of FST: Posters for "A Valediction Without Mourning for the Free Southern Theater, 1963-1980" were printed and a jazz funeral was held. Also includes material relating to black writers and dramatists. Correspondents include Julian Bond, Tom C. Dent, Fannie Lou Hamer, Gilbert Moses, and Theodore Ward. Bulk of the material dates 1965-1976, 1985.

Fannie Lou Hamer was born Fannie Lou Townsend on October 6, 1917, in Montgomery County, Mississippi.
